Renny is a woman who was content to be alone. Something has happened in America and now she is all alone. Every living thing has disappeared - no animals, no people, only empty landscapes. All she has is time. Leaving Kansas, Renny travels to the East Coast, finding no one. Heading back to the mid-west she happens upon Bartleby. He too has all alone, unaware of anything except his daily routine. Why is he the only living thing Renny has encountered? In Bartleby she finds a reason to live, to not be alone.
